Most steam iron problems - spitting water, blocked vents, white flakes on clothes, brown stains on fabric - are not caused by a faulty appliance. They are caused by the wrong water in the tank.

Using the right water in your Rico steam iron is the single most important care step you can take. This guide tells you exactly what to use, what to avoid, and how to keep your iron performing at its best - for years.

Warning Signs - Your Iron Needs Descaling Now

Do not wait for complete failure. Act immediately if you notice:

        •  White or brown flakes appearing on clothes during ironing

        •  Uneven steam - some vents producing more steam than others

        •  Iron spitting water droplets instead of a steady mist

        •  Noticeably reduced steam output despite a full tank

        •  Iron taking longer than usual to reach ironing temperature

        •  Brown water stains on light-coloured or white fabrics

        •  Steam burst becoming weak or infrequent

Descale immediately when these signs appear. If the issue persists after two full descaling cycles, contact Rico's service team →

After Every Ironing Session - 2-Minute Care Routine

This simple routine after each use adds years to your iron's performance:

        • Empty the tank every time - never store with water inside; stagnant water concentrates minerals and promotes bacterial growth

        • Set the steam to minimum before switching off - let the residual steam clear the vents naturally

        • Wipe the soleplate with a soft, damp cloth while slightly warm - removes fabric residue and starch

        • Allow to cool fully before storing - never store a warm iron

        • Store on the heel rest - never rest the iron on its soleplate during storage

        Frequently Asked Questions

What water should I use in my Rico steam iron?

The recommended water for all Rico steam iron models is a 50/50 mix of regular tap water and distilled water. In soft water areas (Kerala, Northeast India), regular tap water is acceptable. In hard water cities (Delhi NCR, Gurugram, Chennai, Bengaluru borewell areas, Haryana, Rajasthan), the 50/50 mix is essential.

Can I use 100% distilled water in my Rico steam iron?

100% distilled water is safe for the SI03 and SI04. For the SI2110 and SI2111 with electronic sensors, the 50/50 mix is recommended to maintain correct sensor conductivity. Always check your model's manual for specific guidance.

Can I use RO filtered water in my Rico steam iron?

Yes. Filtered RO water has significantly lower mineral content than tap water and is a good alternative to the 50/50 mix - particularly suitable in very hard water areas like Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, and Haryana where tap TDS regularly exceeds 500 mg/L.

How often should I descale my Rico steam iron?

Descaling frequency depends on water hardness and usage frequency. Soft water areas - every 4 months. Moderate areas - every 2–3 months. Hard water cities (Delhi, Chennai, Bengaluru) - every 6–8 weeks. Very hard water regions (Haryana, Rajasthan) - every 3–4 weeks. The SI2110 and SI2111 include a built-in Calc-Clean slider that makes this process quick and simple.

My Rico steam iron is spitting brown water - what do I do?

Brown water spitting indicates accumulated mineral deposits inside the steam chamber. Perform an immediate descaling cycle - Calc-Clean slider for the SI2110/SI2111; manual steam flush for the SI03/SI04. If the problem persists after two cycles, raise a service request with Rico or find your nearest service centre.

Should I empty the water tank after every use?

Yes - every single time. Storing a steam iron with water inside allows minerals to concentrate on tank walls, accelerates corrosion of internal components, and creates conditions for bacterial growth. Empty the tank fully after every session and store the iron dry on its heel rest.

Can I use bottled mineral water in my Rico steam iron?

No. Bottled mineral water contains high levels of dissolved calcium, magnesium, and sodium - often exceeding regular tap water. Using it causes rapid limescale buildup. Use filtered, distilled, or the 50/50 tap and distilled mix only.

What should I never put in my Rico steam iron?

Never use vinegar, lemon juice, perfumed or scented water, starch solutions, chemical descalers, ion-exchange softened water, rainwater, or water from dryers or air conditioners. These damage internal seals and metal parts and void your warranty. Only water - in the types listed in the guide above - should go into the tank.
